Plans are in place to build a boardwalk at the Schooner Cove waterfront in Nanoose Bay.
An application to the Regional District of Nanaimo by Turnbull Construction Project Managers Ltd., requesting permission to construction an approximately 82.4 metres section of the Schooner Cove waterfront pathway, which includes the installation of a pedestrian bridge.
The project is a commitment the owner of the property, Seacliff stipulated in the Lakes District and Schooner Cove Phased Development Agreement. The owner, at its cost, is legally bound to provide community amenities as a requirement for its three-phased development project in Schooner Cove.
With Phase 1 now completed, which features 50 dwelling units, commercial floor area and a range of amenities, the developers are required to construct publicly waterfront walkway or a boardwalk before Phase 2 of the development is allowed to proceed.
Once the boardwalk is constructed, the public amenity will be turned over to the RDN, which will oversee its maintenance and funding.
The developers also sought a variance to reduce the minimum setback requirement to permit the installation of a pedestrian bridge.
The Electoral Area Services Committee, at its meeting on May 8, approved staff recommendation to the RDN board to allow the construction of the walkway as well as for staff to complete the required notification for Development Permit with Variance.
Property owners and tenants of parcels located within a 100-metre radius of the subject property will receive a direct notice of the proposal and will have an opportunity to comment on the proposed variance prior to the RDN board’s consideration of the application.
