The Barriere and District Heritage Society will be hiring two students to assist them over the summer this year. Interviews are taking place now and the Museum will be opening for the season on July 4th.

Starting on July 4th the museum will be open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Heritage Society operates the North Thompson Museum and Archives, having received a grant from the B.C. Historical Federation – Centennial Legacy Fund for “Remembering the 2003 McLure Wildfire” display. This special memorial will also be on display at the Wildfire Monument relocation and ribbon cutting event in Fadear Park (to be announced) and on site at the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo on Labour Day weekend.

The Heritage Society is requesting stories and pictures of the fire if residents have anything they would like to contribute. Please contact society members at: bd1986heritage@gmail.com or via a message through their Facebook page ‘Barriere History’. Photos, stories, or memorabilia can also be dropped off at the museum during business hours.

Lorene Fennell, Heritage Society President, is excited to have the summer students joining them, saying, “The students will be involved in giving tours throughout the summer. We will be hiring two students and they will be working with us until Labour Day weekend.” Fennell will be directing the students in setting up displays, giving tours and encouraging them to submit local articles as well.

During the summer months, the North Thompson Museum is open to the public in Barriere. Located at 343 Lilley Road (just off of Highway 5), you can explore the Museum grounds which include a Trapper’s Cabin, outdoor shed for antique farm equipment, Livery Stable housing a steam-powered train engine and a Country Store display with living quarters attached. The latest addition of a Replica 1800’s School House opened in June 2018.
