Sun Peaks recently hosted the Snowboarding BC Provincial Finals for Slopestyle and SBX that took place in the village March 16 through 19.
Competing in the weekend's events were teams from Whistler, Smithers, Apex, North Shore Cypress, Silverstar, Sun Peaks and Barriere.
The Skwelkwelt Indigenous Snowboarding Team members from Barriere in the North Thompson and Kamloops competed together including Jazmine Saunders, Leilani Celesta, Jacob Plummer, Taya Nickel, Jayde Nickel, Grayce Nickel and Domanik Deleeuw.
Jen Nickel, proud mother of some of the team members, told the Barriere Star / Journal Taya Nickel finished fourth in her division, Grayce Nickel got a silver medal in her division, and Domanick came away with the gold. Grayce competed in the U13 girls, Domanick in the U13 boys, Taya U18 and 18+, and Jacob Plummer in U18 all came in fourth place.
"It was a fantastic weekend for competitors, coaches, and families! We can’t wait until next year’s event as a family and as a team," said Nickel.
Coaches, Ed and Char Clarke from Sun Peaks and Earl Celesta and Shelby Nickel from Chu Chua – Barriere supported the youth during the weekend long competition, also coaching the team throughout the season.
