The Barriere Library is inviting kids of all ages to join their 2019 BC Summer Reading Club. This year’s theme is Imagine the Possibilities! Registration is free and is ongoing. Kids receive a reading record to help keep track of their summer reading fun. And, if they complete the program, they will be awarded a medal at the end of the summer.
“We are running weekly activities and you can enter to win a weekly draw for prizes,” says Barriere Branch Head Librarian Pam Rudd, “You have until July 9 to help name our mascot. If your entry is chosen you can win the mascot.”
Rudd says the BC Summer Reading Club motivates kids to read (or be read to) regularly, which helps to maintain or improve their reading skills while school is out. It makes reading fun by inviting kids to read what they want and when they want. The expert staff at the Barriere Library can help kids find just what they like, whether it’s a print book, audiobook, e-book, or magazine.
The BC Summer Reading Club is sponsored by the British Columbia Library Association, with financial support from Libraries Branch, Ministry of Education, and CUPE BC.

Activities over the summer at the Barriere Library include:
• Cultural Connections - July 3 at 1 p.m., and on Aug. 7 at 1 p.m.
• Summer Reading Clubs: (event list attached - all events are geared for ages 6-12 except for Cultural Connections and the Wind-up Party)
• The Read-to-Me Club is for children ages 0-5 who are not able to read or not able to read confidently on their own. It runs from July 2 to Aug. 18. For every day that someone reads, writes, plays, sings, or talks with them they colour a picture in their reading log. These activities all help to develop early literacy skills. When they have coloured all seven pictures in a row they earn a sticker. If they colour all their rows and earn all their stickers at the end of the summer they earn a ribbon and a certificate. They are also entered into the Grand Prize draw. There are awesome prizes to be won.
• The Summer Reading Club is for children ages 6-12 and is a fun reading program run by many public libraries in British Columbia. Each year has a new exciting theme. This year the theme is Imagine the Possibilities! The Summer Reading Club encourages kids to read regularly. This helps to maintain or improve their reading skills while school is out. It makes reading fun by asking kids to read what they like to read. Whether it’s a book, a graphic novel, a comic book, or a magazine on dinosaurs, it all counts!
• Extreme Summer Reading: (Ages 6-12) Take your summer reading to the next level. This booklet of 16 challenges asks kids to read more books, attend great programs, do fun activities, and get theirfamily and friends involved. Extreme Summer Reading Club runs from July 2 to Aug. 18.
• Lego Club - every Saturday (there is Duplo and two new gear building kits).

• July 17 - Astronaut Training Academy 1-2 p.m. (SRC)
• July 24 - Nature Collage Art 1-2 p.m. (RTM/SRC)

• Aug. 7 - Cultural Connections 1-3 p.m. (RTM/SRC)
• Aug. 14 - Hands on Science 1-2 p.m (SRC)
• Aug. 21 - Wind Up Party (and water balloon battle) 1 - 3 p.m.
