The North Thompson Communities Foundation is once again accepting applications for the annual Donnie Nicholson Memorial Trades Bursary Fund from anyone age 18-29 residing in the North Thompson Valley (Blue River to McLure) who is entering a post secondary institution for the trades and/ or technology.
“A $1500 bursary will be awarded after proof of enrollment and satisfactory completion of the first half of the course,” said NTCF representative Sandy Wetterstrom.
Nicholson was a young man who grew up and graduated at the top of his class in Barriere. He was known for being happy, talented, confident, and hard working. At 23 years old, Donnie successfully started his own construction company, and was well known for giving 100 per cent to everything he did. Unfortunately, Donnie passed away suddenly on Jan. 25, 2013.
In 2014, board members of the North Thompson Communities Foundation came together with Nicholson’s mother, to create a lasting bursary for students wishing to go into the trades. A total of $5,050 raised by Nicholson’s friends and family was donated to the bursary, and the NTCF matched those funds to create the annual bursary in his name.
The Donnie Nicholson Memorial Bursary was awarded for the first time in 2019 to Chant Copley of Barriere, and in 2020 to Luke Lavigne of Clearwater.
Wetterstrom advises applications must be submitted by August 30, 2021, and encourages those interested to download the application from the NTCF website at: www.ntcommunitiesfoundation.com.
