Barriere Secondary student Alexis Nelson wins bronze in Quebec

Alexis Nelson of Barriere Secondary is enrolled in the TRU Foundation program in Trades In Transitions. She has won the bronze medal in welding at the 2024 Skills Canada National Competition  (SCNC)  in Quebec which took place on May 30 and 31. 

Nelson will be graduating this year from Barriere Secondary School this year and will be working hard to achieve her Red Seal in welding for a future career in trades. 

Prior to her most recent win, Alexis won Gold medals at the Regional Skills Competition at TRU and the B.C. Provincial Skills Championships in Abbotsford.

In an interview with the Barriere Star/Journal prior to heading to Quebec for the SCNC competition, Nelson said, “I would definitely encourage other young women to pursue a career in trades.”

Nelson's mother, Sharon Threatful said, "Our family is very proud of Alexis. She is so dedicated and we believe she can do anything she puts her mind to."

The TRU Foundation programs provide the knowledge and skills needed for entry into an industry occupation, and the technical training component of an apprenticeship program and training which assists in transitioning into the workforce.

Nelson will be graduating on June 14 during the formal Barriere Secondary School graduation ceremonies with her classmates and is focused on the future looking forward to "hopefully apprenticing with a company like Acres in Kamloops" to become a red seal certified welder.
