This week there were a number of different celebrations for students. On Monday, Mr. McVittie was able to see the Strings students and Mr. Andrews performing at the Sagebrush Theatre. On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to attend the annual Athletics’ year-end social. It was a pleasure to hear different stories about student athletes as they were recognized for different strengths. I was also impressed with the huge support of parents at this event. And last evening, Mr. McVittie, Mrs. Fennell, Ms. Phillips and I had the opportunity to support students at the Simpcw graduation celebration.
Next week the year end events continue. Monday through Wednesday BSS students will complete a variety of B.C. Ministry Graduation Assessments, the schedule is available below. Wednesday is also the annual Grad Breakfast. A tradition where the grads cook breakfast for the whole school! That event is followed by a Grade 12 assembly and the Mystery Tour (grads will be returned to the school approximately 2:30 p.m.).
Wednesday June 21 we also recognize National Indigenous People’s Day.
We end next week with the Graduation Commencement on Friday June 23 at the Curling rink. All Grads must attend the rehearsal. They should meet at the school at 11:00 am in the main entrance of the school. I anticipate that the rehearsal will end no later than 12:45 p.m. (all dependent upon the Grads cooperation at the rehearsal)
Looking ahead to the last week of school, the last full day of classes is Tuesday June 27th. Project Completion Days take place Wednesday June 28th and Thursday 29th. June 29th is an early dismissal at approximately 12:45. A reminder that all students, grade 7-12 are included in project completion days. Some students will be required to attend, based on work that needs to be completed to meet learning outcomes in certain courses. Some students may choose to attend to improve upon a previous content area. IF your child(ren) is required to attend, the classroom teacher will notify the parent/guardian. If you are unsure, please do not hesitate to contact the classroom teacher directly.
Finally, I am pleased to recognize three students who will be representing Barriere, B.C. and Canada at the North American Indigenous Games this July 15-23 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Anthony Green will be competing in Badminton, Thunder Camille will be attending for Softball. Leilani Celesta has also been selected as an injury spare for the Softball team and she is ready to jump into action if needed. The 10th North American Indigenous Games will host competitions in 16 sports within 21 venues across Kipuktuk (Halifax), Dartmouth and Millbrook First Nation. The North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) 2023 will bring together more than 5,000 athletes, coaches and team staff from 756+ Indigenous Nations celebrating, sharing and reconnecting through sport and culture with the help of 3,000 volunteers.
Congratulations and best wishes to these three students on the accomplishments of being selected to compete in these Games.
