Barriere Secondary School (BSS) will be missing an endearing presence at the school on opening day this year, now that longtime employee Kristine Luison has "graduated" from BSS (again).
On June 20 the staff of School District #73, family, and friends gathered to celebrate Kristine's retirement. A tea party was held in the BSS library to recognize her dedication and commitment to her job. The group watched a retirement video filled with congratulations from many people who have worked with her throughout the years, as well as photos and memories from her years of service.
Kristine began her 27 years at SD73 as a science lab tech, then enjoyed various roles in administration, and completed her career as the secretary in charge at Barriere Secondary. She brought passion and energy to her work life. Principal John Tyler recounted her dancing to the morning music, and her use of endearments to the staff and students.
Affectionately, Kristine thanked everyone for the time she had spent with them and gave commendations to her upcoming replacement, Stefanie Appel.
Activities continued on June 26, the last day students were in school, with a surprise for Mrs. Luison, who returned from lunch to a schoolyard of students dancing with her to the song Happy.
Kristine’s genuine commitment to the well-being of the students was exhibited through her posting of the students' accomplishments in the local paper and on the visual display screen in the school entrance. Throughout the years, Kristine could be spotted in the bleachers cheering on the students during their sporting and fine arts events. She was their number one fan, assisting in preparations and support to ensure activities went smoothly. She took on large projects as well, being instrumental in procuring the electronic notification sign at the roadside of BSS and raising funds for the new outdoor basketball court blacktop.
Kristine has an active and positive presence in the community, and is especially involved with the Terry Fox Run annually. Everyone at work will miss her, and appreciates all the value and positivity she added to both the school and the community over the years.
Sending out a big "Congratulations" and hugs from all, with well wishes in your next chapter of life, Kristine; or, as the students of BSS affectionately say, "Mrs. Luison."
