Barriere Secondary Grade 12 student wins silver at national skills competition

Logan Jones competed in carpentry

Submitted by Brenda Jones

Logan Jones is currently enrolled at Barriere secondary in Grade 12. He will be attending TRU in the carpentry program in the fall of 2023.

Logan has always enjoyed working with his hands and took a keen interest in high school shop class. He has received invaluable direction from Mr Fielding, his shop teacher, and has taken that knowledge and built on it at his job at Paradigm Panels in Louis Creek.

At Paradigm, Logan works with red seal carpenters and has been able to build his carpentry knowledge to be able to follow engineered plans and build accordingly. Their leadership has been fundamental to his abilities as a carpenter. He would also like to recognize Tim Kasten from TRU for his invaluable direction throughout this experience.

Logan competed at regionals in March at TRU, surprising himself by earning the gold medal. In April, he went to Skills BC Competition in Abbotsford, again earning the gold medal for high school carpentry.

This past week, Logan has been in Winnipeg, competing in the Skills Canada National Competition. He had two days, for a total of 12 hours, to complete his carpentry project. In that time he built a child size gazebo with railings and a bench seat. He was able to use power tools but all nails were done the old fashioned way, with a hammer.

Logan earned the silver medal in High School Carpentry at Skills Canada Nationals.

Logan would like to thank TRU, Paradigm Panels, Barriere Lions Club, Barriere Secondary School staff and students, family and of course his amazing community, both Barriere and the Squam Bay community. He has received such a huge amount of support and love as he prepared for competition. He has been overwhelmed by everyone’s kindness.

Also, a huge thank you from us, Ian and Brenda. It has been an amazing adventure and we are so proud of him. We are excited to see what the future will hold for this young man.
