The 43rd annual Terry Fox Run took place in Barriere on Sunday Sept. 17 with support from local runners according to organizer, Kathy Cooper.

“This year’s event took place at Fadear Park in Barriere with 73 participants registered for the run and we raised $6,489 for the Terry Fox Foundation,” said Cooper.

Even though so many years have passed, the legacy of Terry’s Marathon of Hope to bring awareness and support to cancer research lives on year after year, in small towns, schools and larger cities across Canada. Some of the most memorable quotes are often also brought to mind from Terry himself.

“When I started this run, I said if we all gave one dollar, we’d have $22 million for cancer research, and I don’t care man, there’s no reason that isn’t possible. No reason!”

During a speech in Toronto, Fox responded to the applause in the crowds.

“Those claps, take them for yourself. If you’ve given a dollar, you’re part of the Marathon of Hope. That ovation was for you, wherever you are in Canada.”

His words and the determination to encourage everyone to keep his life’s mission in the fight against cancer can be best summed up in another famous quote from him, “Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me.”

Year after year since he started the marathon, that is what Canadians across the country have continued to do in his memory, motivated by his courage, example and determination.

There will be more runs taking place this coming week in B.C. keeping this Canadian hero’s message alive once again.

The Terry Fox Foundation website is encouraging participants across Canada to leave their own personal messages, memories and artwork that will be used for future promotions on t-shirts and for campaigns. You can view messages or leave your own at: https://terryfox.org/
