On June 6, D-Day, during an evening ceremony the Royal Canadian Legion # 242 in Barriere, 70 veterans were honoured at 6 p.m. at the Barriere cemetery with a candlelight vigil.

The 128 battery operated candles flickered in remembrance as dusk fell. Addressing those gathered legion president, Maryanne Shewchuk said, "This candlelight tribute was to honour the veterans in our local cemetery on the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The candlelight tribute started in 1995 in the Netherlands when Dutch children laid lighted candles on the graves of Canadian soldiers leaving them burning overnight in a silent tribute to the fallen. Since that time these tributes have increased in Europe and here in Canada. The subtle glow of these candles, especially when placed in numbers create a solemn and unforgettable image for an evening of remembrance. Lest we forget."
