The North Thompson Museum and Archives held their first Barriere Heritage Tour in 2019. The tour consisted of seeing the ‘old and new’ in downtown Barriere, as well as Meeksville, and the old Barriere Bridge on Pettersen-Betts Road.
This year the annual Barriere Heritage Tour and Information Gathering will be taking place on Saturday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m., starting at the North Thompson Museum and Archives on Lilley Road in Barriere.
Tour organizer Donna Kibble advises the group will be going to Fadear Park to discuss the building of the park, where the Airport was, plus Barriere Elementary School, and Barriere Senior’s Centre.
“We will then proceed to the parking lot at the downtown mall where we will talk about the building of the mall, AG Foods, the Firehall, the Ambulance Station, and the Search and Rescue building,” said Kibble, “We will discuss the building of the Barriere Diagnostic Health Centre, the apartment building, Yellowhead Pioneer Residence, Barriere Country Feeds, the Library, and a number of businesses that no longer exist.”
Kibble adds the group will then go to the parking lot at the old IGA store next to the Interior Savings building, where folks will be able to talk and comment about the old downtown of Barriere.
“We hope some of our long time residents and family members will join us and help us with some of the dates, businesses of the past, and names that will fill in the Barriere History timeline we are working on regarding the 1960s to current,” added Kibble. “If you or anyone you know who would be interested in this but needs a ride please let us know. We also hope that people will car pool so that we are not causing traffic problems downtown.”
Kibble adds that once the tour has been completed at approximately 12:30 p.m. it is hoped everyone with the tour we will return to the Museum for an open house, coffee, snacks and hopefully more stories and information gathering.
