Barriere festive light displays add cheer to season

The final night of the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association displays is Monday, Dec. 23

Thanks to the efforts of four hardworking volunteers, the community of Barriere is enjoying a festive light show at the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Grounds once again.

North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association director Laura Mairs said the association board came up with the idea for a festive light display during the COVID-19 pandemic and have continued it ever since.

"Nothing was open during COVID so it gave people somewhere they could go," Mairs said.

This year there are 30 displays and admission is by donation, with all proceeds going toward the upkeep of the grounds.

"We've had lots and lots of people come and see it," she confirmed, adding the final night will be Monday, Dec. 23. "It has been really fun. We've had bonfires where people can sit around and visit too."

There have also been some girls fundraising for a trip to Europe who have selling hot dogs.

Santa Claus visited last weekend for two night and someone who owns mini horses brought them in as well.

"It is such a beautiful, beautiful community event," Mairs added.

On Sunday evening, Dec. 22, second vice-president Craig Spink drew the winning ticket for the 50/50.

Ron Chute won $14,120.

"The money is a bonus for whomever wins it, but it also allows us to grow and buy more displays."
