Barriere families celebrate Literacy Week with Teddy Bear picnic

The annual Teddy Bear Picnic was held at The Ridge in Barriere inviting families to unplug and play during Literacy Week.

Numerous young families gathered at The Ridge in Barriere on Sunday Jan. 26, for a day of indoor fun at the much-loved Teddy Bear Picnic. This annual event is held each January during Unplug and Play Week, and Literacy Week in B.C., and is sponsored by Beem Credit Union and Yellowhead Community Services.

Kids brought their favourite Teddy bears and stuffies to share in all the fun, with a very special stop at the table of much loved Teddy Bear Doctor Sherrie, where each bear or stuffy received a full health check, complete instructions on how to best care for your bear or stuffy, plus a Teddy Bear Good Health Certificate signed by Doctor Sherrie.  There were numerous games to play, a colouring table, slides, Lego and fun toys galore.  Also a free brand new book for every child.

Organizer of the event was Barriere and Area Literacy outreach coordinator Jill Hayward, who encouraged families to enjoy their time together and to unplug and play. Families socialized, enjoyed their picnic lunches, the yummy snacks for all, and made new friends.

Hayward said the event was exceptional, especially when all the kids paraded around the hall to the Teddy Bear Picnic Song, while carrying their bears and stuffies.

"I have already received positive feedback from many of the parents," commented Hayward after the event. "One mom said her kids were still talking about how much fun they had enjoyed at the event many hours later."

Hayward said the day was filled with fun for all, and added "a big thank you to volunteer helpers Judy Armstrong, Sherrie Dilley, Pat Paula and Debbie Wilson."
