The Feb. 28, District of Barriere Council Meeting included council going through a third review of the 2022 budget. The timeline to adopt the financial plan and tax rate bylaw is on April 11, with staff presenting the departmental budgets, and also capital projects including fees and charges for council’s review.
“Council’s goal is to keep budget increases at a minimum, but at the same time maintaining slight fee increases for services to keep up with the cost increasing that occur in the Canadian economy,” reports District of Barriere CAO Bob Payette.
A copy of the proposed budget information can be reviewed on the district website at: www.barriere.ca.
Staff also reported to council that the affordable housing project slated for Barriere has been cancelled by Yellowhead Community Services.
“Contact with BC Housing has been initiated to determine if the affordable housing project is canceled or postponed until a future date,” said Payette.
With spring just around the corner, a number of development applications have been initiated in what looks to be another busy construction year for Barriere.
“The new water well (DW3) continues to be tested and conditioned and work will take place on the older well (DW2) this week to replace the well pump,” added the CAO.
Over the next few months TRUE engineering is scheduled to conduct a review of the roads within the district to determine road conditions and a schedule for required road repairs, which will culminate into a report that will be presented to council along with recommendations.
Council has requested staff to take a look at Yard Road in front of the Station House Restaurant, and also Dixon Creek Road, as they seem to be in the worst condition at this time. Additionally staff will look at the possibility of doing some erosion control measures up on Dixon Creek Road.
A review of the Leonie Creek Dam has been initiated to consider the future of the dam, which at one time many years ago was the district’s main source of water. The Leonie Creek Dam is no longer required for that purpose.
“Planning continues for a number of projects in Fadear Park this summer, including a fenced-in dog park, updating the ball fields and if all goes to plan, the much anticipated Barriere Community Skateboard Park adjacent to the water splash pad, “ said Payette.
