The District of Barriere officially launched their Barriere Blooms project for 2022 on Wednesday, March 30.
“This year we are going to concentrate on container gardening,” advised contest organizer and District of Barriere Councilor Donna Kibble, “Many vegetables and herbs do well in container gardens and can be grown in many types of containers. You can hang your containers, or arrange them on your patio, window sill or balcony.”
“The district is hoping this year that COVID-19 cooperates so the contest judges can go to resident’s homes to do the judging,” added Kibble.
The district encourages residents and businesses to participate in the contest and plant gardens to show their resilience.
Entry forms can be printed from the district’s website at: www.barriere.ca. Completed forms can then be dropped off to the district office in person into the drop box at The Ridge, 4936 Barriere Town Road, or emailed to inquiry@barriere.ca. A Barriere Blooms Facebook page will also be posting contest information, as well as answering gardening questions, providing gardening tips, and encouraging entrants to post pictures showing their progress. Judging will be taking place in August.
Kibble added a word of advice for those taking on container gardening for the first time.
“It is important that you don’t over-water your container plants, as this can be just as fatal to their health as under-watering. Plastic containers are the best and require the least amount of watering, but if you want to stick with clay or earthen pots then you should line the inside with plastic. This helps it retain water more, as the clay will soak up water.”
