Barriere library will be welcoming author David Norwell on Saturday June 1 from 1 - 2:30 p.m. to discuss his book, A Complex Coast.

Don’t miss this opportunity to visit with David and ask him about his interesting kayaking trip to Alaska and his experiences with the ocean’s living creatures he’s learned about along the way.

“I grew up in Kamloops and spent my summers in Valemount. I remember driving through Barriere dozens of times as a kid, many times often with my head out the window, a bit like a dog. I love the North Thompson and I learned a lot from watching the river in all its different seasons,” Norwell says. “I especially love the cottonwoods. I wrote the book because it is what I wish I could have read when I was 18 years old. Growing up in these small and medium-sized interior towns can be a bit tough, and limited as far as what kids can dream of, and hope to achieve. It’s amazing to be able to talk about my experience on the coast in places I grew up.”

Norwell explains his reasons for writing the book and how much he’s learned personally when public speaking and having “a sense of place” and shares his coming of age story as a young adult. Norwell will be giving away some free copies of his book to anyone who can answer some of the coastal creature feature trivia.

Barriere librarian Pam Rudd says,”This will be such an interesting afternoon with David and I am really looking forward to hosting him here in Barriere, a place he loved coming through as a youth.”
